The term “hockey,” according to The Canadian Encyclopedia, can be traced to a 1773 book published in England called Juvenile Sports and Pastimes. But the name may pre-date this earliest known reference. In 1949, a magazine in the Soviet Union claimed the sport was invented and perfected in Russia in the mid-19th century. But those claims may be dubious.

Many historians have looked at the question of who invented hockey and, unfortunately, there's not a clear-cut answer. This is probably due to the fact that ice hockey as we know it today developed over the course of hundreds of years. Some scholars believe that hockey's roots go back over 4,000 years to ancient Egypt where a crude stick and ball game was played. Evidence also exists that similar games were played by the ancient Ethiopians, Romans, Greeks, and Aztecs. Of course, when we think of hockey, we think of ice hockey. Those early stick and ball games likely evolved into various games that were played on frozen ponds across Europe. The development of the modern version of organized ice hockey played as a team sport is often credited to James Creighton. In 1872, he moved from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Montreal, bringing skates, hockey sticks, and a game with a basic set of rules with him. In 1875, Creighton organized indoor hockey practices at the Victoria Skating Rink.

A very rough form of the game of hockey has been discovered in Egypt. Around 4,000 years ago. As well as artifacts found in Ethiopia from 1000BC and Iran in 2000 BC. It is believed this ancient form of hockey was played by the Romans, Greeks, and the Aztecs. The modern form of hockey that we all know and love today was spread around Canada by British soldiers in the mid-1800s. There is also research that mentions a hockey-like game played in the early 1800s by Mi’kmaq (Mimac) Indians in Nova Scotia, which was influenced by the Irish game of hurling.

The origins of hockey can be traced back almost 4’000 years, with historical references found in Iran, Egypt and Greece. The birth of modern hockey and drafting of the first rules of the game was in the United Kingdom in 1876, following the establishment of the first clubs, Blackheath Club (est. 1849) and Teddington Hockey Club (est. 1871).
