British athletes with a definite shot at a medal can receive up to £28,000 in funding each year, mainly from the National Lottery. Many athletes have to work full time jobs to be able to compete though realistic GB medal hopefuls may receive National Lottery funding.

The agency invested a total of £245,837,685 across the cycle, giving each medal an average cost of £3,782,118. But with some sports proving far more profitable than others, a look at UK Sport's funding of Olympic disciplines shows that some medals 'cost' over triple the price of others. As per Telegraph Sport, the most expensive of Team GB's medal's across the two weeks was Lewis Richardson's welterweight bronze. Cycling receives a staggering £29.3m of the UK Sport pot and Team GB's athletes duly stepped up to win 11 medals, including Emma Finucane's hat-trick on the track and Tom Pidcock's miraculous cross-country gold at the start of the Games, at an expense of £2.7m per medal. Tommy Fleetwood's golf silver medal was Britain's only freebie, as golf is not a sport funded by UK Sport.

Team GB receives grants ahead of their Olympic appearance to put towards their training and maximise their chances of podium finishes. The UK is one of the few countries that doesn’t offer a direct cash incentive for placing on the podium overall but British Athletics has branched out to offer medal bonuses independent of the government.

Without UK Sport there would be no Team GB at the Olympic Games given the organisation’s role in distributing funding to athletes across the board who are challenging for medals. After Paris 2024 there will be another review to decide where, if anywhere, UK Sport cut and increase funding. Here’s a breakdown of how much each medal and gold medal equated to in funding.

While team GB does not reward their athletes, many other countries do. The first reason, and perhaps the most important, is around money. The Olympic Committee has a limited budget and simply can’t afford to reward its athletes. With team GB being a reasonably successful Olympic team, some members have argued that the committee simply does not have the funding to award the numerous medalists with a cash prize. Other people argue that the athletes don’t require the cash prize because an Olympic medal can indirectly lead to an increase in income from brand partnerships and other marketing opportunities.
