Teddington Hockey Club are the world’s oldest and due to delays relating to the pandemic, they are celebrating their 150th anniversary this year. The sport of hockey was formally invented in Bushy Park by the local cricket club looking to play sport following a particularly wet summer, and created hockey and Teddington Hockey Club which still exists to this day. Marcus Wardle, archivist at the Hockey Museum, said: “Teddington are the founders of modern hockey. Hockey as a game has been around for centuries, and Teddington formalised the rules and the way the game is played back in 1871.

It was the first established hockey club. Constituted in 1861. Members are still living who were playing at that date. The first Hockey Club was undoubtedly Blackheath.

Streatham Ice Hockey Club in South London is one of the oldest clubs in the UK, established in 1932. Originally founded in 1932 as Streatham, the name Redskins was added in 1974. During the 1980s, we were one of the leading teams in the British Hockey League. During the 2015/16 season, we formalised a decision that had been on the cards for some time by dropping the Redskins part of the name. During the close season, fans, players and management voted to change the name of the club to Streatham Ice Hockey Club, keeping it simple and staying true to our roots.
We are one of the oldest British ice hockey teams still in existence.

The first Hockey Club was undoubtedly Blackheath. This club was formed not later than the year 1840. In the early days, Blackheath Hockey and Football (Rugby) were one club and they did not become separate entities until 1864. Today the Club is part of a thriving sports club operating seven Mens teams, four ladies teams as well as regular mixed, festival, youth and junior teams.
