It was the first established hockey club. We have been accepted and ‘rightfully’ exist as the oldest club for 160 years, it’s a bit late to change that now. ‘It’s undoubtedly Blackheath’. The first Hockey Club was undoubtedly Blackheath. We just are. Constituted in 1861. So we feel no need to strive to prove Blackheath are the oldest hockey club.

BATH HOCKEY CLUB – SOMERSET’S OLDEST HOCKEY CLUB
Formed in 1889 by Weston Cricket Club.
No records remain of the early existence of the Club, all records were destroyed by the Luftwaffe during air raids on Bath in 1942, with just one faded newspaper article dated 1924 surviving.

The first Hockey Club was undoubtedly Blackheath. According to the book “Hockey” written in 1899 by P.A. Robson and J. Nicholson-Smith:- “This club was formed not later than the year 1840. Members are still living who were playing at that date”. The oldest record in The Club’s possession is the minute book of 1861 which refers to the subscription being 7/6 and the retiring secretary Mr.R.O’Neill. In the early days, Blackheath Hockey and Football (Rugby) were one club and they did not become separate entities until 1864. ‘The Blackheath Hockey Club’ Est:1861

Newtown Hockey Club was formed in 1896 and is the oldest in Wales. The club has also hosted teams from Japan, India, South Africa, Canada, Zimbabwe, Scotland, South Korea and Malaysia - further underlining its global status as the oldest club in Wales. Newtown Hockey Club have been ever-presents in the Welsh hockey scene since 1896.

Teddington Hockey Club are the world’s oldest and due to delays relating to the pandemic, they are celebrating their 150th anniversary this year. The sport of hockey was formally invented in Bushy Park by the local cricket club looking to play sport following a particularly wet summer, and created hockey and Teddington Hockey Club which still exists to this day. Marcus Wardle, archivist at the Hockey Museum, said: Teddington are the founders of modern hockey.
