The longest football match in recorded history was the showdown between English clubs Stockport County and Doncaster Rovers at Edgeley Park on March 30, 1946. The duration of the match was a remarkable three hours and 23 minutes and the world record has stood for over half a century. It was a Division Three North Cup replay, after the first game ended 2-2 and, as it would turn out, 203 more minutes could not yield a victor.

The game stopped and it took 42 minutes for the lights to be turned on. The players returned to play for three minutes until the official time of the match was over and then the extension began, one of the longest in football history if not the longest.

At Wimbledon in 2010, the first-round match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut lasted 11 hours and 5 minutes. The two battled over the course of three days. On the first day, the match had to be halted at the end of the fourth set because it was too dark to continue. On the second day, the scoreboard stopped working and eventually shut off, as it was only programmed to go to 47-47 (but it would be fixed by the third day). The match was halted on Day 2 once the sun went down. On Day 3, Isner won the deciding final set, 70-68.

At 203 minutes, excluding intervals, the match had pipped the Cardiff game by three minutes. After nearly 400 minutes the sides were finally – and emphatically – separated.
