The First Ladies hockey club was started by East Molesey in 1886, with Ealing ladies, it is believed, coming along soon after around 1888. So, by 1889 Ealing boasted both men’s and ladies’ clubs: The men at their new ground at Drayton Green near West Ealing and the ladies in Gunnersbury Lane. During this period, it became the first women’s club to celebrate 100 years and organised a whole series of events, tournaments and a centenary dinner.

Today (2 March 2021) marks the 125th anniversary of the first women’s international hockey match, which took place at the Alexandra College ground in Milltown, Dublin in 1896 in front of 2,000 fans. Ireland took the spoils on this occasion, managing a 2-0 win having won the first men's international fixture the year before too.

Furthermore, it also marked almost exactly 55 years since the two contested the first ever women's international game back in 1896. On 3 March 1951, England's women began an annual tradition of hosting fixtures at the venue by beating Ireland 6-1 in front of 30,000 fans. The women would go on to contest an annual match against international opponents every year up to 1991, winning 25 of their 41 matches and attracting a record crowd of 68,000 in 1976.
