Professional Ice Hockey was first played when the rink finally opened in 1952 and the Royals were formed. The rink has a rich HISTORY which dates back to 1938. After an absence of two seasons professional ice hockey was quickly reintroduced however by the start of the 60’s, British ice hockey had entered a new 'amateur’ phase which was to remain for nearly 20 years. There have been a number of Teams over the years with the most successful tenure being the Murrayfield Racers (1966 - 1994) who were the dominant force in British Ice hockey during this period.

British ice hockey developed in the mid-1800s and the UK’s iteration of the game is what most now think about when it comes to the sport. Back then, ice hockey was played with a stick and ball and was a way for Englishmen to pass time. Eventually, the popularity of ice hockey spread to the point that amateurs started organizing teams and playing in friendly tournaments. Of course, as the number of spectators grew, so did the opportunity for formal leagues to come along and turn ice hockey into a professional sport. Five years later, the first pro ice hockey game was played in Scotland and the International Ice Hockey Federation was started to bring cohesion to teams and leagues around the world.

Scottish emigrants to Canada played shinty on ice in winter, giving rise to the game of ice hockey. The Scottish shinty connection has been made in a number of Canadian centres, including the vigorous Scots community of Kingston, Ontario, where a newspaper report from 1899 states: Hockey is a graduate of old man shinny. This is supported by other reports of sons of Scotland playing shinty on the ice in front of the town as early as January 1839.
