Blackheath Hockey Club is reputed to be the oldest Hockey club in the world and was formed no later than 1840. In 1897, almost 57 years later, an advert appeared in the Loughborough Echo announcing that: “The newly formed Hockey Club for Loughborough will hold a practice match this afternoon at Shelthorpe at 3 o’clock to which all interested in the game are invited”. It was after that practice match that Loughborough Town Hockey club was officially formed.

Blackheath Hockey Club marked their 150th anniversary with a match on the heath against a Parliamentary team full of MPs and their staff. Founded by the Old Boys of Blackheath Proprietary School, the club used to play its matches on the heath but, since 1952, has been based in Rubens Street. Committee member Michael Earnshaw said: "The match we played was next to the church on the heath which is where this club started."

Teddington Hockey Club are the world’s oldest and due to delays relating to the pandemic, they are celebrating their 150th anniversary this year. The sport of hockey was formally invented in Bushy Park by the local cricket club looking to play sport following a particularly wet summer, and created hockey and Teddington Hockey Club which still exists to this day. Marcus Wardle, archivist at the Hockey Museum, said: “Teddington are the founders of modern hockey." "But in my opinion Teddington are the most influential team in modern hockey because they formalised the rules and you can see their influence all over the game.”
