In 2012, London became the first city in the world to have staged the modern Olympic games three times. Never mind the 1948 or 1908 Games, the first recorded Olympic Games in Britain took place in 1612. Further ‘Olympic’ Games took place in a number of locations, including Much Wenlock (Shropshire), Liverpool, London, Llandudno, Birmingham, Shrewsbury, Oswestry and in the Northumberland town of Morpeth. In both 1908 and 1948 London stepped in to assist the International Olympic Committee when all other options were ruled out.

Great Britain has only ever won the Olympics once. That came all the way back in 1908, when the Games were held in London. The 1908 Olympics was relocated to London – which hosted for the first time – from Rome after Mount Vesuvius erupted in Italy, leaving 100 people dead and devastating the city of Naples. Team GB has had further success, finishing 3rd in the medals table at London 2012, and in second place in Rio in 2016.
